I went to Santiago, Chile for a biopharmacy course
this summer. I was responsible for handing out our CDs to the course
participants. No one spoke English at that table, and I don't speak
any Spanish. I had to quickly learn how to pronounce the letters of
the alphabet in Spanish.... "E" is pronounced "A",
"I" is pronounced "E".... Don't I look very confused?

 |
Adriàn Vega took us all to visit the building
for the professional pharmacists organization. This was a beautiful
table with a wood inlay of a pharmacy logo. |
You can see the ornate carvings on the walls and
ceiling. |
 |
Regina took us up to a ski resort in the Andes.
It was strange traveling to the southern hemisphere, where it is winter
while the US is sweltering in the August heat! |
 |
 |
 |
In Santiago, the entire city was covered in so much
smog that you couldn't see the Andes. Once you go into the mountains,
however, the air is clear. |
 |
 |
 |
As we were coming down the mountain, I thought there
was a layer of fog in the horizon. In fact, that's the smog hovering
over Santiago! It looks pretty when you're above it, though. |

These next photos were sent by Adriàn Vega
(in the center), taken at the closing ceremony of the course. Next
to Adriàn is Marival Bermejo, and behind her is Gladys Chicago. |
 |
 |
The entire closing ceremony was in Spanish, and
I neglected to get an earpiece to listen to the translation. I wasn't
paying attention until I heard my name mentioned! Marival was kind
enough, as usual, to translate for me. |
 |
I was sitting where they were taking photos, so
I moved next to Gladys and Regina Pezoa. Gladys and Regina work for
the ISP in Chile, which is the Institue of Public Health. They were
the main organizers of this course. |
