Judy went to Japan in September. We went touring around
Kyoto with our hosts from Shionogi Qualicaps Co. From the left is Angel
from Madrid, Masaharu Mori , me, Gordon Amidon, and Greg Bowers. |

This was a temple not far from the hotel in Kyoto, Higashi
Hongan-ji. The central hall in this complex is one of the largest wooden
structures in the world. |
There are fountains at the entrances to these temples.
You are supposed to wash your hands here. Some of them have potable water.
Those that do not are clearly marked. |

This is a diagram of the entire area. You can see that
there are many buildings in a huge courtyard. |
 |
This is the Golden Temple at Kinkaku-ji. It was originally
built in 1397! The pavilion is covered in gold leaf. |
A pretty little bridge across the pond covered with
lotus plants. |
 |
This is a geisha-in-training, a maiko. She was having
her photograph taken, so we got the benefit of her poses. |

This is a rock garden at the Ryôan-ji. |
The Japanese have lovely gardens. This is a moss garden. |

This is an old temple in Nara, which was the capital
of Japan in the 700s. The temple is located in a park where there are
deer roaming loose. |
 |
The doors to this place were enormous. Our hosts, Shunji
Nagata and Sansei Oka, kidded me about all my questions regarding the
engineering aspects of these temples. |
It was dark in the temple, so the image isn't very clear.
However, you can see how huge this statue is. |

This is a wooden statue at the gate, one of a pair of
fierce looking 'guardians'. Originally carved in the 13th century, they
have been restored. |

I stayed at the Tokyo Dome Hotel, and I could see the
Tokyo Dome from my hotel room window. I tried to take a photo at night. |
